Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that uses applications of very fine, tiny needles to create “controlled damage” in the skin, breaking down damaged tissue and promoting natural healing responses designed to “lay down” new, healthy tissue. The controlled damage created during a professional microneedling treatment stimulates the natural production of collagen, one of the building blocks of healthy skin that also plays an important role in skin healing and remodeling. Microneedling treatments are performed using a special device that contains an array of evenly spaced, very tiny needles. The device ensures accuracy and precision across the treatment area for optimal and consistent results.

When is microneedling used?

Microneedling is especially effective in treating wrinkles, creases, and scars, including acne scars, as well as areas of uneven texture and enlarged pores. Increased collagen production helps aging skin look and feel smoother, firmer and more resilient over time, with collagen production and remodeling occurring over a period of three to four months after treatment in most patients.

What happens during a microneedling treatment session?

Prior to treatment, the skin is carefully evaluated to map out the treatment plan. The microneedling device is applied to the skin in a specific pattern, enabling the tiny needles to penetrate the skin and create tiny “columns” of damage to promote healing responses and collagen development. In some cases, microneedling may be combined with the application of topical skin products, enabling these products to penetrate deeper layers of skin where they can be more effective.

Is professional microneedling painful?

Although the name “microneedling” sounds painful, the special needles used during treatment are very fine and small, penetrating the upper layers of skin and causing very little discomfort or no discomfort at all. Once treatment is complete, the skin in the treatment area may appear pinkish, similar to the pink tone caused by a mild sunburn, but the effect will resolve soon afterward.

How many treatments will I need?

Although even a single session can result in some improvement, most patients benefit from a series of four to six treatments performed over the course of several weeks.
