Cellulite Treatment Q & A

What causes cellulite?

Cellulite is easily recognizable by its lumpy, bumpy appearance just below the surface of the skin, and while it may look different from “normal” fat deposits, cellulite is actually just that - fat. It’s actually the bands of fibrous connective tissue that surround the fat that gives cellulite its “cottage cheese-like” appearance. Cellulite becomes more noticeable as we get older and these bands of tissue become stiffer, pushing the fat deposits closer to the skin. Plus, age causes the skin to lose some of its natural elasticity and volume, allowing cellulite deposits to become more visible. Those bands also restrict the fatty tissue so it’s much more resistant to diet and exercise.

How can I get rid of cellulite?

It used to be the only way to get rid of cellulite was to have invasive liposuction procedures to mechanically break down fibrous bands of tissue and release the fat they contain, suctioning the fat away through a hollow tube called a cannula. While liposuction can be effective, like other surgical procedures, it requires prolonged recovery times and considerable tissue damage and discomfort. Today, noninvasive options like Velashape use radiofrequency (RF) energy to reach the deeper layers of tissue without using incisions and surgery.

How does VelaShape work?

VelaShape uses a special applicator to deliver radio frequency energy and infrared light energy to the layers of tissue where fatty deposits are trapped, gently breaking down fibrous bonds that trap cellulite so the body can eliminate it naturally. Then a patented roller system and gentle external suctioning are used to promote lymphatic drainage and stimulate collagen development so skin looks firmer and smoother over time. VelaShape uses no incisions, and there’s no downtime, so patients can resume their regular activities right after treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Although a single VelaShape treatment can yield noticeable results, most patients achieve optimal results following a series of four treatments.
